Broncos head coach Sean Payton has come out strongly for his players and quashed any trade talks, but this could be more showmanship and a chance for potential suitors to put on their best bow ties and top hats.
“We’re not looking to do any business with our players,” Payton said recently, despite the Denver team starting the season 1-4.
With the NFL Halloween trade deadline looming Payton was dead set on trusting his players, but also leaving a little wiggle room for teams.
“That doesn’t prevent teams from calling at times. We just — you pick the phone up, but that’s kind of where it’s at,” he said yesterday.
With such a poor start convention dictates the Broncos would be selling.
This was shown to be the case in the past week, with pass rusher Randy Gregory off to San Francisco and strong rumors suggesting a move away from Denver for former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Frank Clark.
The Broncos wide receivers Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton could also be out of Denver soon.
Payton’s words sound a bit hollow and could be postulating and trying to maximise trade deals.
Denver faces the unenviable task of two games against defending champions the Chiefs sandwiched with a game against the Packers.
Trade day ends on October 31 and with the Broncos looking at a 1-7 season at that time, it could be hi ho silver for a few players.
