Less than a year after the Buffalo Bills saw safety Damar Hamlin suffer from cardiac arrest on the field during a primetime game versus the Cincinnati Bengals, the Bills experienced yet another potentially frightening injury in front of a national audience during their Week 6 win over the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football.
Bills running back Damien Harris entered the game late in the second half to receive what ended up being his first and only carry of the game and sustained a scary-looking neck injury. Harris was met by Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke at the point of contact and his body did not respond well to the hit, which caused him to hit the ground. The Bills medical staff quickly ran to the field to his aid.
After a brief examination on the field, Harris was placed on a backboard and into an ambulance to be sent to the hospital shortly thereafter. Bills head coach Sean McDermott confirmed that Harris has full movement in his body and is “heading in a good direction,” per ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg.
It seems as though Harris was able to avoid a serious injury based on the initial reports surrounding Harris being as positive as they can be given the circumstances.
Following Harris’ departure from the game, the Bills were able to narrowly defeat the Giants 14-9. The Giants had an untimed down at the Bills’ one-yard line with a chance to win the game on the final play of the game, but quarterback Tyrod Taylor missed tight end, Darren Waller, on what would’ve been the game-winning touchdown.
Hopefully, Harris can return to the field sooner than later. In the meantime, we wish him a speedy recovery.
