Playing quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys is one of the toughest gigs in the NFL, as you not only need to win, but win in style.
This was in evidence when Prescott was made to squirm by the media despite leading the team to a narrow 20-17 win over the Chargers earlier this week.
Prescott has led his team to 4-2 record and second spot in the NFC East, trailing the 5-1 Eagles.
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy can feel the heat on the line caller.
“I love Dak Prescott as our quarterback,” McCarthy told Mad Dog Sports Radio this week.
“The way he’s built all the way through, obviously his physical skill set is excellent, but what he endures mentally and emotionally compared to the other 31 (quarterbacks) is unique. In speaking on experience being around great quarterbacks, I’ve never seen a quarterback under a microscope like he is.”
The Mississippi State alumni was drafted 135th by the Cowboys seven years ago and despite the low drafting plenty was expected of him from the onset.
He did win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Season in 2016, so we guess he had it coming.
He was the winner of last year’s Walter Payton award, as well as a two-time Pro-Bowl player.
He has thrown for a career 26,276 yards and a 66.7% completion rate.
McCarthy was involved with the coaching of legends Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre in a senior capacity, so he knows a thing or two about line calling.
“I know when I was around those guys, it was pretty much all football. And it’s obviously a different generation that we’re dealing with, with the intensity of the external responsibilities,” McCarthy said this week.
“I just think the intensity of the microscope on Dak, I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Whether he is trying to protect his quarterback or help propel him to greatness the end result is the same.
