Brooks Koepka, the winner of the 2023 PGA Championship, has opened up about his decision to join the Saudi Arabia-funded LIV Golf circuit after leaving the PGA Tour last year. Speaking on the BS w/Jake Paul Podcast, Koepka candidly stated that he made the move for financial reasons. He emphasized that he wanted to secure his family’s financial future and acknowledged that life is uncertain, and having that financial stability was a significant factor for him.

In his own words, Koepka said,

“Look, I’ll be honest with you – I signed for the dough. I’m 100% behind that. I don’t know if tomorrow I’ll get in a car accident and never play golf again, but my family is taken care of. That was a big thing for me, not doing it for anything else. Everybody else, they go to their 9-5, most of them don’t like their 9-5, but they’re doing it because they get the paycheck. That’s the same thing as us.”

He expressed his love for the game of golf and the joy of winning, adding that he would play for free because of his passion, but financial security was crucial. Koepka’s move to LIV Golf reportedly involved a staggering $130 million deal. When asked about the specifics of the deal, he confirmed it was in the nine-digit range and expressed his satisfaction with it.

LIV Golf has attracted numerous golfers from various golf series globally by offering substantial financial incentives. However, it’s worth noting that some prominent golfers, including Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, and others, have chosen to remain loyal to their respective series and turned down the lucrative contracts offered by LIV Golf.
