After spending all 12 seasons of his illustrious career with the Golden State Warriors, could this be Klay Thompson’s final season in the Bay Area? Per The Athletic’s senior NBA insider Shams Charania, there is a “significant gap” in extension talks between Thompson and the Warriors.
With the gap between the two sides being as wide as it is, “signs point” to Thompson entering 2024 free agency per Charania.
It is tough to imagine Thompson in any uniform other than the Warriors, but it is now looking like a very real possibility after this season. Thompson has been a key cog in the Warriors dynasty over the past decade, where they’ve won four NBA Championships.
Thompson and teammate Stephen Curry have formed what is widely regarded as the greatest three-point shooting duo of all time. Both rank within the top 12 list of most three-point field goals made throughout a career, with Curry being No. 1 by a wide margin.
The two have been known as the “Splash Brothers,” for their ability to drain threes at a high rate.
For his career, Thompson has averaged 19.8 points per game, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists while shooting over 40 percent from beyond the arc. In addition to being a four-time champion, Thompson is a five-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA player.
Thompson has also established himself as one of the premiere “3-and-D” wing players in the NBA for his ability to play both ends. He has an All-Defensive team appearance to his name as well.
If/when Thompson enters free agency based on Charania’s report, he will have no shortage of suitors. Several teams will covet his shooting/defensive ability and his championship pedigree.
