The commentator’s curse is real, us football fans know it all too well, but CBS play-by-play voice commentator Kevin Harlan only went and put the mockers on Patriots kicker Anders Carlson.
Yes, Carlson would go on to miss the field goal and Green Bay went on to lose against the Broncos 19-17.
Here is the commentary of the FG verbatim. Cringe with us if you want:
“Which brings us to Anders Carlson, the rookie. His brother of course, Daniel, the All-Pro kicker for the Raiders. Anders, as a rookie, has not missed.”
“He’s made two from 50 yards or more, the longest 52. He’s knocked in all ten of his extra points…this will be a 43-yard try to put the Packers on the board.”
Game analyst Trent Green was no better egging on the jinx by saying, “And Kevin, in warmups, he was making them pretty consistently at 58 yards. Well into the net.”
It was too late to back out, the words were spoken, and the curse was cast, turning a 43-yard first half attempt into the Bermuda Triangle.
Carlson had been perfect the entire season up to that double quip and there is no doubting his talent, but he is no a statistic to the commentator’s curse.
