The Arizona Diamondbacks are just one win away from reaching a milestone that many people didn’t expect them to reach. With a win tonight against the Phillies in Philadelphia tonight, they will advance to the World Series. Even at this point, Chris "Mad Dog" Russo is skeptical.
Russo is an American sports radio personality who has television/radio programs with SiriusXM, MLB, and ESPN. Recently, he went as far as putting his career on the line if the Diamondbacks defeat the Phillies and advance to the World Series.
"I’ve been wrong on Arizona [Diamondbacks] from day one," Russo prefaced his proclamation during his radio show on Monday. "And I’ll say this right now, and Bob Raissman, write it down, if they win the next two games and win this series in seven games… I will retire on the spot."
Russo made those comments before Game 6, which the Diamondbacks won to tie up the series and force a Game 7 at Citizens Bank Park. Unless Russo wanted to retire, he must be nervous after threatening to do so if the Diamondbacks are able to pull this out.
The Diamondbacks barely made the playoffs after finishing the regular season with an 84-78 record and just one game ahead of the Chicago Cubs for the third and final spot in the National League Wild Card race. Now, they are a game away from making franchise history.
The last time the Diamondbacks reached the World Series was in 2001, three years after the franchise was founded when they faced the New York Yankees and defeated them in seven games.
It will be fascinating to see if Russo actually decides to retire if the Diamondbacks overcome a 3-2 series deficit to advance.
