In college football, a lot of the pressure is directed toward the head coach of a respective program, especially when that program is as esteemed as Notre Dame University. No matter the circumstances, the media will always find questions to ask the head coach.
However, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman took the opportunity to even the score in a recent press conference. After being asked questions by a slew of reporters, Freeman decided to poke fun at one of the reporters whom he has a personal relationship with.
“My turn?” Freeman asked before directing two questions at Irish Illustrated’s Tim O’Malley. O’Malley is a reporter for Irish Illustrated by day and a youth flag football coach by night. One of the kids he coaches is Freeman’s son, Nico.
“Second/third-grade championship game, two trips to the red zone, zero points. One play was a reverse pass that was intercepted in the red zone. You were the offensive coordinator on there? Thoughts on the red zone play calling?” Freeman asked O’Malley jokingly.
Freeman seemed to relish this moment and have fun with O’Malley with the latter entertaining the bit. He gave Freeman his rationale as to why he decided to call a reverse pass before Freeman moved on to his next and final question.
“Last question. There was a Nico Freeman in that same game that had a long run that was negated by only having one flag on… Whose responsibility is it to make sure the young man has two flags on?”
O’Malley didn’t hesitate to throw his assistant coach under the bus to which Freeman replied: “C’mon, Tim. You got to own it now.”
Both Freeman and O’Malley got a glimpse of what it is like to be on the other side of the podium in this hilarious exchange.
