After the Indianapolis Colts lost a nail-biter on Sunday to the Cleveland Browns on a controversial penalty call, owner Jim Irsay took to social media to express his frustration. However, he may have violated NFL rules in the process, which could cost him.
On X (also known as Twitter), Irsay said that the league admitted they were wrong on the controversial illegal contact penalty that was called on Colts cornerback Darrell Baker Jr. on a play where defensive tackle DeForest Buckner recovered what would’ve been the game-sealing fumble.
“The NFL admits and understands that they did not make the correct calls at the end of Sunday’s Colts/Browns game,” Irsay posted. He went on to say: “I believe we need to institute instant replay for all calls, including penalties, in the last two minutes of all games.”
While that sounds like a reasonable request to ensure the end of games doesn’t get determined by poor officiating, Irsay may have stepped on some toes in the process by publicly sharing that the NFL admitted they were wrong.
In light of Irsay’s statement, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero took to social media to shed light on the situation and pointed out that the NFL “communicates with teams on a weekly basis about various calls.”
“Team officials are prohibited from commenting publicly on those discussions. Now, a team owner has publicly said the league admitted to officiating mistakes. Stay tuned…” Pelissero reported ominously.
It will be interesting to see how the NFL addresses the situation involving Irsay and the Colts.
