ESPN has been working tirelessly to build up its hockey coverage and may have struck gold in its most recent attempt. Inspired by NFL RedZone, ESPN created their segment called Frozen Frenzy, to give fans whip-around coverage of all 16 NHL games on Tuesday.
Fans got to see “every goal, every power play, and every hit” with ESPN anchor John Buccigross and analyst Kevin Weekes hosting and narrating the all-access coverage on ESPN2.
This was a big step for ESPN, who reclaimed NHL broadcasting rights during the 2021-22 campaign, and their coverage of the NHL. NHL fans expressed their interest and approval of the program on social media which has to be a reassuring feeling for ESPN.
@KyleCannillo on X (also known as Twitter) stated: “Frozen Frenzy was a massive success. I highly recommend the NHL considers this a few times next year. Credit where it’s due: ESPN has taken a lot of heat for their hockey coverage, but they nailed this.”
@JetsPope on X/Twitter went as far as saying “Frozen Frenzy is the best idea the NHL has ever had.”
There is no confirmation on when/if there will be a second segment of Frozen Frenzy but people would be interested and happy to tune in if given the opportunity.
Even on a night when the NHL had to compete with the Opening Night of the NBA season and Game 7 of the MLB’s National League Championship Series, hockey fans tuned in and enjoyed the show.
Hopefully, ESPN can continue to give the people what they want.
