The Los Angeles Rams are in search of a new starting kicker after recently releasing Brett Maher following his poor performance that saw him miss two field goals last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Per NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo, the Rams are working out a group of kickers today. Among said group of kickers is former Green Bay Packers long-time kicker, Mason Crosby.
Crosby was drafted by the Packers in 2007 and they’re the only NFL franchise he’s ever known. He’s spent his entire 16-year NFL career with the Packers and etched himself into Packers history as the highest-scoring player in franchise history (1,918 points scored) by a wide margin.
In 2023, Crosby declared for free agency, allowing himself to play for a team other than the Packers for the first time in his career. Now, he has a chance to become the Rams starting kicker after the spot has been vacated.
Despite Maher being tied for first in field goals made through the first seven weeks of the 2023 NFL season, he ranks near the bottom of the league in field goal percentage (73.9). In other words, Maher left a lot of meat on the bone throughout the season.
Maher is the only kicker in the NFL that has made at least 14 field goals and has a field goal percentage below 80. Unfortunately, his inconsistency left the Rams with no choice but to release him.
If Crosby impresses the Rams during his workout and is offered a contract, seeing him in a uniform other than the Packers may take some getting used to.
