Despite being in the NFL, Chargers rookie defensive end still gets star-struck when he sees one of his favorite football players, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Footage captured by NFL Films revealed Matlock confronting Kelce after the game to have a quick conversation.
Matlock prefaced the conversation by telling Kelce he is a big fan of his, followed by him referring to Kelce as a “cool ass dude.” Fittingly, Kelce told Matlock “You got to have some fun with it, baby,” as the two shared a moment.
Then, Matlock posed a question to Kelce: “Any advice for a rookie?” Kelce’s response was not only informative but motivational.
“Understand the other side of the ball just as well as you know your side of the ball… Play with the guy next to you.”
Kelce gave Matlock an inside glimpse as to what makes him the elite tight end he is. His awareness and knowledge of what defenses are doing to try to contain him have helped him become a better player.
Additionally, Kelce harps on the idea of playing with and for the guy next to you. As a key cog of a Super Bowl team, Kelce knows it can’t be done alone and that for a player/team to succeed, it takes everyone buying in and doing their part.
It’s awesome to see the sportsmanship between these two players after Kelce dominated the Chargers defense en route to a Chiefs victory.
The Chargers and Chiefs are slated to meet again in Week 18 and it will be interesting to see how/if these two interact again and if Matlock can use Kelce’s advice against him.
