After dropping their 2023 NFL regular season opener on their home turf against the Detroit Lions, teams and fans of the NFL viewed it as a sign that Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are going to be vulnerable this season. Then, they rattled off six straight wins to quiet any doubters.
Now, after a concerning loss against the Denver Broncos and their league-worst defense, Mahomes and the Chiefs are 6-2. Despite having one of the best records in the NFL, Mahomes knows the team cannot take this loss lightly if they want to repeat as Super Bowl Champions this season.
“Teams are going to replicate it and try to find different versions of it,” Mahomes said in his postgame comments regarding the Broncos defensive strategy.
After struggling against the Broncos in two of the last three weeks (Week 6 and 8), it’s evident the Broncos have a successful formula to slow down Mahomes and the high-powered Chiefs offense. Mahomes is aware of this and knows the team needs to adjust moving forward.
“Two of the last three weeks they’ve seen the Broncos stifle our offense,” Mahomes stated after the game.
The Chiefs failed to score a touchdown in Week 8 and Mahomes completed 24 of his 38 pass attempts for 241 scoreless yards and two interceptions.
Mahomes and the Chiefs will need to get the offense turned around quickly before a Week 9 battle for AFC supremacy against the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins currently rank first in points per game (33.9), so Mahomes and the Chiefs need to be prepared to exchange scores with the NFL’s most explosive offense.
