This comes as no surprise, as the Packers have been keen on extending Gary’s deal for some time now. The 2019 first-round pick had been playing on a fifth-year option of his rookie contract worth $10.892 million this season.
Gary’s new contract includes a staggering $96 million in fresh money, which includes a hefty signing bonus of $34,646,928.
With this extension, Gary’s deal will run through the 2027 season and could potentially be worth up to $107,532,706 when accounting for all bonuses.
The decision to sign Gary to a long-term extension was partially influenced by the ACL injury he suffered in his left knee last November.
The Packers wanted to ensure that Gary regained his form before committing to a new deal. Fortunately, Gary has not only recovered well but has actually shown improvement since his injury.
While the Packers have eased Gary back into action by limiting his snaps, his performance on the field has been exceptional.
Despite playing in just 39% of the defensive snaps this season, Gary has managed to record 4.5 sacks and 15 pressures in seven games.
Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings saw Gary playing a season-high 46 defensive snaps.
in Week 3 against the New Orleans Saints. Despite being on a limited snap count, Gary sacked the quarterback three times in only 23 snaps, with just 18 of them being pass rushes.
In fact, Gary boasts an impressive record of 27 sacks in his 63-game career.
When it comes to salaries for defensive players, Nick Bosa set a new record earlier this season with a five-year, $170 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history with an average annual salary of $34 million.
Following Bosa, T.J. Watt ranks second at $28.15 million per year, with Joey Bosa close behind at $27 million and Myles Garrett at $25 million.
With the new money in his contract, Gary’s annual salary of $24 million places him just below Garrett.
