American podcaster/sportswriter for The Ringer Bill Simmons has made a living for himself by covering the NFL. However, his coverage of the league has not translated to sports betting success and he is costing everyone money with this weekly “Million Dollar Picks” segment where he shares his favorite NFL bets for each week.
The concept of the segment is that Simmons is given $1 million to work with throughout the NFL season to turn a profit by wagering on games weekly. However, instead of turning a profit, Simmons is running out of money to play with.
His Week 8 picks were 1-6 and per The r/BillSimmons Podcast account on X (also known as Twitter), Simmons is down $854,000 on the picks he’s made through the first seven weeks of the 2023 NFL season.
Simmons has been so wrong with his sports betting predictions that he is now debating scrapping the segment altogether. “I might just dump Million Dollar picks and come up with some different gimmick where I pick games on Sunday,” Simmons stated during an episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast.
While Simmons is debating putting an end to the weekly segment, The Ringer’s partnership with FanDuel Sportsbook may make that more difficult than he’d like. Given that FanDuel is The Ringer’s exclusive sports betting partner and Simmons’ role as a prominent podcast host at The Ringer, he will likely need to continue making wagers/predictions on NFL games.
However, what happens if Simmons loses the entire $1 million before the conclusion of the season? Simmons has already lost a majority of his funds and there are still 10 weeks left in the regular season.
