The Las Vegas Raiders inability to score points continues to cost them games. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has not only been ineffective but also inconsistent and the Week 8 Monday Night Football game between the Raiders and Detroit Lions has led many to wonder when/if head coach Josh McDaniels will decide to bench Garoppolo.
The Raiders offense has yet to score more than 20 points in a game this season and the one time the team eclipsed 20 points this season was because Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby forced a safety in the final moments of the team’s Week 6 victory over the New England Patriots.
Despite this, McDaniels has been reluctant to address the state of the quarterback position. McDaniels was asked after the 26-14 loss to the Lions whether or not a quarterback change is on the horizon, to which he replied: “I’m not gonna talk about that right now.”
Garoppolo leads the NFL in interceptions (9) despite missing Week 7 against the Chicago Bears due to a back injury. In his return to action on Monday night, Garoppolo struggled mightily, completing 10 of his 21 pass attempts for 126 scoreless yards and an interception.
McDaniels and Garoppolo have a connection dating back to their days with the Patriots, where the two won two Super Bowls together in 2014 and 2016. Their pre-existing relationship may not only be costing the Raiders an opportunity to make the playoffs this season but may also result in McDaniels losing his job if the Raiders don’t turn it around quickly.
