The Arizona Diamondbacks Cinderella story has officially come to an end. Unfortunately, it didn’t end the way most fairy tales do. The Diamondbacks were defeated 5-0 in Game 5 of the World Series yesterday, crowning the Texas Rangers as 2023 World Series Champions. The Rangers won the best-of-seven series in five games, with a 4-1 series result.
The Diamondbacks barely made the playoffs, narrowly edging out the Chicago Cubs by one game for the third and final Wild Card spot. With that in mind, they made the most of their opportunity and reached the World Series for the first time since 2001.
Just because they were a massive underdog throughout the postseason, doesn’t make the loss hurt anymore for the Diamondbacks and their fanbase. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo made that evidently clear in his postgame comments last night, sending an emotional apology to the fans for not finishing the job.
“I’m just sorry. I’m sorry, I didn’t do my job to get us there. They want a world championship as badly as we do,” Lovullo said to the fans as he had tears in his eyes.
While it isn’t the result they wanted, the Diamondbacks have a lot of reason for optimism moving forward after this impressive postseason run to the World Series. The future is bright for the Diamondbacks considering how young of a team they are.
Two of their best hitters (Corbin Carroll and Gabriel Moreno) are only 23 years old. Also, two of their players, Zac Gallen and Ketel Marte, are firmly in the prime of their careers at 28 and 30 years of age. This may not be the last we’ve heard of the Diamondbacks.
