With Kirk Cousins out for the season, these are the available options for the Vikings QB for the next season

The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly interested in re-signing quarterback Kirk Cousins in 2024, according to Ian Rapoport.

Cousins is currently in the final year of his contract and will become an unrestricted free agent next year, as the Vikings cannot use the franchise tag to retain him.

Rapoport also states that other teams in need of a quarterback have been operating under the assumption that Cousins will be available.

However, Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell has spoken highly of Cousins’ performance before tearing his Achilles.

Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has stated that “all options are on the table” regarding Cousins this offseason, including re-signing him and drafting a young quarterback for the future.

One advantage for the Vikings is that Cousins may not be healthy enough to pass a physical in March. But the team’s own doctor performed the surgery to reconstruct his Achilles.

Despite Cousins having plenty of options with other interested teams, it seems that a return to the Vikings is still a strong possibility. Cousins, who is now 35 years old, was a fourth-round pick by Washington in 2012.

He played out his rookie contract before being franchise-tagged in consecutive seasons. Cousins eventually left in free agency, signing a three-year, $84 million contract with the Vikings.

In 2020, he agreed to a two-year, $66 million contract extension, followed by a one-year, $35 million contract extension in 2021, which was fully guaranteed.

2023 will be the final year of Cousins’ current deal, and he is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2024.

In 2023, he played in eight games for the Vikings, completing 69.5 percent of his passes for 2,331 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
