Following the New York Jets’ 27-6 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on ESPN’s Monday Night Football, NFL Hall of Famer and color commentator Troy Aikman was critical of the Jets and their performance.
After watching and providing commentary on the game, Aikman stated that "… it’s hard to look at [the Jets] tonight and say that they’re good." Aikman doesn’t think the Jets have passed the eye test despite their 4-4 record and some numbers support his sentiment. The Jets currently have a negative point differential (-24) through their first eight games. For reference, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans have lower point differentials but a worse record than the Jets.
Aikman went on to say that he thinks the Jets are a "bad team with a great defense." The defense held its own in this game, containing Pro Bowl quarterback Justin Herbert to just 136 scoreless passing yards. The Jets outgained the Chargers, converted more first downs, and possessed the football for nearly 10 more minutes and were still unable to score a touchdown in this game.
The Jets offense, led by quarterback Zach Wilson, has not been able to get much of anything going this season. Through eight games, the Jets ranked 30th in the NFL in points per game (16.5). The team has won four games largely despite Wilson and the offense, but if they want to be seen as a threat by Aikman and their NFL opponents, they’re going to have to find ways to put up points.
