Broadcaster Al Michaels Confirms He Will Be Back for 2024 NFL Season

At this stage in his career/life, network sports television is all Al Michaels knows. Since he became the radio play-by-play announcer for the Cincinnati Reds in 1971, Michaels has enhanced sports broadcasting and taken his talents to new heights. Now, Michaels is the play-by-play announcer for Amazon Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football coverage.

Michaels turns 79 in just a few days, which has left many wondering about his future in the broadcasting booth, but he’s put those concerns to bed by confirming he will be back for the 2024 NFL season. Andrew Marchand of The New York Post caught up with Michaels to discuss his plans beyond this season and the latter stated: “As far as I’m concerned, I’m doing next year.”

In the second year of a three-year pact he signed with Amazon, next year will be his last season calling Thursday Night Football on Prime Video barring an extension. Despite no contractual obligation beyond next season, Michaels made it clear to Marchand that he wants to continue broadcasting after that.

While Michaels is one of the more well-respected and recognized broadcasters in sports, it may be tough for Michaels to land another contract. Many have begun to question if he can provide play-by-play analysis anymore with excitement and energy. Critics feel that Michaels has been unable to match the intensity of games in big moments.

Regardless of how viewers may feel, Michaels is a legend in the broadcasting booth who has earned the right to walk away on his terms. Additionally, he insists that he hasn’t changed much (if at all) about how he announces games. “I don’t think I’m a lot different than I have been through the years,” Michaels said.

Perhaps people are getting tired of hearing the same voice for so long. It doesn’t mean that Michaels has lost a step by any means. It is great to hear he will be back for next season.
