Before the reports broke out as Angel"s new manager. Back in 2022 during The All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium, Washington shared he wanted to manage again, no matter the circumstances of any prospective team that might call on him.
He said back then,
"Wherever [the opportunity] is, I’m gonna build."
The 71-year-old will manage his first game with the Angels soon, making him the oldest manager in the league since Dusty Baker retired.
Alex Anthopoulos, the Brave"s president of baseball operations and general manager, also comments on Washington, saying,
"He’s great. Tremendous. Outstanding. You’re not gonna find better. A guy who’s won, high-energy, level of respect is off the charts."
Washington will be replacing Phil Nevin, who wasn’t re-signed last month after the 11/2 losing seasons in charge of the long-struggling Angels.
