After coming up just short in last season’s NCAA women’s basketball tournament National Championship game, Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes have come out firing to start the 2023-24 season. Clark recorded 44 points, eight rebounds, and six assists en route to leading the Hawkeyes to an 80-76 victory over the No. 8-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies yesterday.
The remarkable performance from Clark was her fifth career game with at least 40 points, five rebounds, and five assists, three of which have come against top-10 ranked opponents per ESPN Stats & Info. Clark has more 40-5-5 performances in her career (five) than the rest of Division 1 has (three) since her career began. This is just one of many stats that highlight how dominant she has been during her career.
Clark shot 13 of 31 from the floor against the Hokies, making five threes. She also added a block on the defensive end and scored the Hawkeyes’ final six points of the game in the last minutes of the fourth quarter to will her team to victory.
Last season’s AP Player of the Year Award winner is only improving and poised to get her team back to the National Championship in her senior season in hopes of finishing the job this time around and this early-season win over the Hokies was a statement that the rest of the country should take note of.
Up next for the Hawkeyes is a road game against the Northern Iowa Panthers on Sunday, Nov. 12.
