Despite winning 92 games in 2023, the Milwaukee Brewers seem poised to prepare for the future. After losing their manager Craig Counsell, who signed a five-year contract with the divisional rival Chicago Cubs that makes him the highest-paid manager in MLB history, he may not be the only member of last season’s roster who won’t return for 2024 and beyond.
Per The Athletic’s senior MLB writer Ken Rosenthal, the Brewers are open to trading “virtually any player.” The Brewers are coming off a 2-0 series loss to the eventual NL Champion Arizona Diamondbacks in the Wild Card Series and have several valuable veterans that could bolster contending rosters if they decide to be active in the trade market.
Former NL MVP and two-time All-Star Christian Yelich should have no shortage of suitors. He is under contract through 2028 and is one of the more well-rounded players in baseball. Additionally, the Brewers have two top-tier starting pitchers Corbin Burnes and Brandon Woodruff that will draw plenty of interest if they’re available.
Burnes won the Cy Young Award in 2021 and has been an All-Star in each of the past three seasons. Woodruff is a former two-time All-Star who had a 5-1 record with a 2.28 ERA in his 11 starts last season. Not to mention, the Brewers also have closer Devin Williams, a two-time All-Star and former Rookie of the Year Award winner.
What the Brewers decide to do this offseason could have a major impact on the landscape of the MLB and potentially swing the pendulum in next season’s pennant race.
