According to ESPN Stats and Info, “In their win over the Wild Sunday, the Stars scored 5 power play goals & 2 shorthanded goals. They are just the 2nd team all-time to score at least 5 power play goals and 2 shorthanded goals in the same game. (Other instance: MIN vs WPG on Nov. 11, 1981).”
From the side of the Minnesota Wild, the players who scored were Matt Zuccarello, Brandon Duhaime, and Vinni Lettieri. There were twenty-nine saves completed by Scott Fleury.
The Dallas Stars recorded five power-play goals and secured a “franchise record” over six opportunities, which the team got. The Minnesota Wild also set a novel record for the extended number of power-play goals enabled. The Stars also defeated the Wild last year in six games as well.
According to NHL, the head coach of the Dallas Stars, Peter DeBoer, shared, “If they’re going to chase hits and do that, then we’re going to have to make them pay on the power play and we did that again,”
“Maybe this is what we needed, a team that took a bunch of stupid penalties so we could work on it.”
“We showed up and executed right from the first shift of the game,”
“We were ready to play, knew the importance of the game and got the job done.”
Marcus Foligno, the forward of the Wild, also shared, “A penalty-kill goal and a power-play goal against — it’s just ugly,”
“It’s just a negative way to start a game. We did battle back, but we keep coughing it up.”
Jared Spurgeon, the captain of the Wild, said, “We shoot ourselves in the foot being in the box that many times,”
“But when you’re in the box, you still have to kill a penalty, whether it’s blocking a shot or just making a play to get the puck out.”
The right winger of the Dallas Stars, Tyler Seguin said, “It’s what every team talks about in training camp,”
“You want to have a good start. You want to have a good road record and be good on special teams. We’re going to go home and take care of business there now.”
Further sharing, “Yeah, that’s the story of the game,”
“We’ve seen it a few times against these guys, and you know they come so aggressive. You accept that and try to make the little plays. I thought we played great. We’re glad our power play clicked tonight. We’ve been trying to find that and get rewarded for that for the last little while.”
The Dallas Stars will next face the Arizona Coyotes and the Minnesota Wild will be against the Ottawa Senators.
