Tony Romo and Jim Nantz have been CBS’ top NFL broadcast team for years. In that time, the two have developed a great relationship to the point where fans can feel it through the broadcast at times. Anyone who was watching the Week 10 meeting between the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions was able to tell that Romo and Nantz were enjoying their time together in the booth during the game.
In the latter stages of the fourth quarter in what was a closely contested game between two teams with playoff aspirations, Romo heard an audible from Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert that prompted him to crack a joke directed towards Nantz.
"Down ziggy, down ziggy," Herbert announced to his teammates at the line of scrimmage.
Once Romo heard Herbert’s audible, he couldn’t contain himself. "Sounded like ‘down ziggy, down ziggy,’" Romo said. "Which tells me, let’s get down and get jiggy with it like you like to, Jim [Nantz]." All Nantz could do was look at Romo and say "Right" in response as he tried to stay on task with his broadcasting.
Once Romo saw the joke didn’t land the way he had hoped it would, he quickly mocked himself for attempting it. "That was the best I could come up with," Romo stated jokingly.
Romo was once viewed as one of the NFL’s best analysts but has been the center of criticism regarding his broadcasting since, and this instance may have only added fuel to the fire.
