After years of trying to find their quarterback of the future, the Washington Commanders may have finally found their franchise signal-caller in Sam Howell. Howell currently leads the NFL in passing yards through the first 10 weeks of the NFL season but doesn’t seem to care too much if it doesn’t result in the Commanders winning games.

“Honestly, I don’t really look at it a whole lot,” Howell said via an official transcript from the Commanders when asked if he is aware of leading the NFL in passing yards.

“It doesn’t really mean much to me… We haven’t won the games that I feel like we should have won this season. So that’s a little bit disappointing, but I really don’t look too much into what I’m doing on a personal level,” Howell added.

Howell has been on fire over the past three weeks, throwing over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns. The recent stretch has elevated Howell to the top of the leaderboard in passing yards, with 2,783 on the season.

The Commanders selected Howell in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He backed up the likes of Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke as a rookie, neither of whom are with the team anymore. So, the Commanders decided to see what they have in Howell this season, which has paid dividends thus far.

While the Commanders are just 4-6, they’re just two games back of the Minnesota Vikings for the final Wild Card spot in the NFC playoff picture. While Howell’s efforts haven’t translated to wins, he’s making his case to be the quarterback of the present and future for the Commanders.
