After the New York Giants and Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley were not able to come to terms on a long-term contract extension this offseason, Barkley was essentially forced to accept a one-year contract extension slightly above the value of the franchise tag. Barkley says the experience has taught him not to focus on a contract and worry about only the things he can control.
Barkley is continuing to play through a high-ankle sprain he suffered earlier in the season and was seen receiving treatment on his ankle during last week’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys. This week, Barkley was asked during a press conference how playing through injury could impact his chances of receiving a long-term contract this offseason and he was very candid in his response.
“Loyalty means nothing,” Barkley said according to the team’s transcript from the press conference. “That’s something I’ve learned. So, for me, the way I try to handle that is not really to focus on that, try my best not to think about it,” Barkley added.
As a team captain, Barkley is leading by example and showing his teammates he is committed to this team no matter the circumstance surrounding his contract.
The Giants have been monitoring Barkley’s reps in practice throughout the week as they prepare to face the Washington Commanders. Barkley said he expected to play this weekend and will be relied upon heavily with undrafted rookie quarter Tommy DeVito expected to be the team’s starter.
