The Washington Commanders have lost two games to the likes of two different New York Giants backup quarterbacks this season following their Week 11 defeat. After the game, Commanders head coach Ron Rivera acknowledged the blown opportunity this past week and loss to undrafted rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito, calling it a “low point.”
“Well, it’s a low point, that’s for sure,” Rivera stated according to The Athletic’s Ben Standig. “Any time you got an opportunity to win a football game, and you put up the numbers that we did, you got a chance – but you got to convert,” Rivera added.
DeVito took nine sacks on Sunday and still managed to throw for 246 yards and three touchdowns. The Commanders outgained the Giants by over 100 yards but managed to lose by double-digits. Forcing nine sacks on the defensive end and generating more yards than the opposing offense is normally enough to win an NFL game, but not this time.
The difference in the game ended up being the turnover battle. The Commanders had six turnovers to the Giants zero.
Commanders Quarterback Sam Howell continuously shot himself and the rest of the offense in the foot on Sunday, throwing three interceptions. Tight end Logan Thomas, wide receiver Byron Pringle, and running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. lost a fumble during the game.
If Week 11 was a low point, things should only get better from here. A divisional clash against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving will be Rivera and the Commanders’ next opportunity to right the ship.
