Gonzaga to the Big 12? Presidents expected to meet this week to discuss and potentially vote on conference expansion

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have dominated the West Coast Conference for much of the past three decades, having won 21 conference tournaments since 1995. They also have 25 conference regular season titles to show for it in that span. Their supremacy in the WCC has helped turn them into one of the most prestigious Division I college basketball programs in the nation.

Now, after dominating the WCC for as long as they have, they could be headed to the Big 12. With programs such as Houston, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, Kansas, and Kansas State occupying the Big 12, it would put Gonzaga in a conference that is more up to par with their skill level.

The Houston Chronicle reported that Big 12 school presidents are expected to meet this week to discuss the idea of expanding the conference, which could lead to a vote being held on whether or not Gonzaga should be a part of the Big 12.

According to Front Office Sports, Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark has “overwhelming support” from conference presidents to add Gonzaga to the illustrious conference. Gonzaga would need 75 percent approval from conference presidents in the voting process.

It will be fascinating to see how the vote plays it, as it could have implications on other teams/conferences around the nation. Last year’s NCAA Tournament Champions, the UConn Huskies, could find themselves in the mix of these discussions for conference relocation if Gonzaga were to get approved.
