Is there a worse word than hindsight in the dictionary? It means retrospectively what could I have done differently not to lose?
And the latest to feel the wrath of the word is Bills coach Sean McDermott, who is being panned for a call he made in the dying embers of regular play against the Eagles.
The game went into overtime and the Philadelphia team clawed their way to a 37-34 win to extend their record to 10-1.
For the record books, the Eagles levelled the scores with 20 seconds on the clock with a 59-yard field goal, converted by Jake Elliott.
“I thought about it. I thought about going for it. It’s just with their pass rushers and 20 seconds,” McDermott said.
The Bills had a chance to run into field goal territory with the ball in hand at the 25 Yard mark, but the HC was worried quarterback Josh Allen would be sacked.
Allen took a knee and wound down the clock, in a decision that will haunt McDermott for ages.
Asked why he did not save his timeouts for just such a scenario he said, “Hindsight’s always 20/20. Believe me, it’s gone through my mind more than once,” McDermott added.
The mistake could cost the Bills a playoff spot come end of the regular season, this one play, one timeout, one risk could make or break their season.
In hindsight, a coach’s worst friend.
