The Chargers can’t buy an umpire break on Black Friday and their luck was 9ur again in their 20-10 home last to the Ravens.
The LA team was looking dead in rights to score a touchdown on their opening play, but a flag was thrown on a Justin Herbert run near the Ravens N-zone.
According to referee Alan Eck, as quoted to AP reporter Joe Reedy, “So, the ruling on the field was that the quarterback was trying to gain yardage,” Eck said. “While he was still in bounds, the defender committed to the tackle.
And as his foot landed out of bounds, the defender made contact. So, since the defender already committed to the tackle while the quarterback was in bounds, it was deemed a legal.”
Herbert was hit by Ravens safety Geno Stone after he appeared out of bounds, and this ignited a reaction from teammate OT Jamaree Salyer.
They had to settle for a field goal. Whether the call would have changed the result is a stretch, and the Chargers will do well to focus on next week when they take on New England.
