When the Colts fired Frank Reich last season, owner Jim Irsay brought in former player Jeff Saturday as the interim head coach, but Saturday didn’t get the permanent job. Now, in Carolina, a former Panthers player, Greg Olsen, who is currently a top analyst for Fox, is reportedly interested in becoming the Panthers’ head coach.
This potential move would be surprising, as Olsen, like Saturday, has no coaching experience in college or the NFL. While Olsen has coached his son’s Pop Warner team, he transitioned to the broadcast booth after retiring in 2021. Although he worked his way up in broadcasting, it’s expected that Tom Brady will replace him on Fox’s top NFL broadcast team.

If the Panthers consider Olsen, it might spark criticism, similar to when the Colts hired Saturday and when the Texans interviewed Josh McCown twice for their head coaching position. McCown was recently fired as the Panthers’ quarterbacks coach, marking his first coaching job in the NFL.
Olsen, 38, whose father was a longtime high school coach in New Jersey, is unlikely to even get an interview. The Panthers’ head coaching job is not highly sought after in the coaching world, given the team’s recent history of turnover. Under owner David Tepper’s six seasons, Carolina has had six head coaches, including three interim coaches, and has a record of 30-63, with only the Jets having a worse record in that time.
