College football has become an American tradition to the point it garners nationwide attention when the big Division I programs make headlines. Currently, one story that is garnering headlines is the unique coaching carousel that has been filled with several twists and turns.
Several big-name head coaches have been linked to head coaching vacancies, but many of them haven’t come to fruition. After Texas A&M bought out Jimbo Fisher, it was reported that the current Kentucky head coach Mike Stoops was expected to fill the void left by Fisher. However, after some backlash from Texas A&M’s fanbase, it was announced Stoops would remain with Kentucky.
Instead, Texas A&M hired former Duke head coach Mike Elko to replace Fisher. Before Elko was hired, Ohio State’s Ryan Day and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney were linked to the open head coaching job. Day and Swinney are two of the most highly-regarded head coaches in the nation, so hearing their names come up in rumors to ultimately not be signed is noteworthy.
ESPN’s Dan Mullen reportedly met with Syracuse’s Athletic Director, John Wildhack, to discuss their head coaching vacancy. However, Mullen openly denied showing any interest and Wildhack said that a meeting between the two never happened.
What’s going on here? Who are we supposed to believe? There are so many wild rumors being thrown around regarding the college football coaching carousel, it is getting tough to keep up with.
