According to inside MLB sources there is merit in the rumor that Padres star Juan Soto could be making the move to the Yankees.
Talks are at the stage where names are being thrown around in a swap deal including infielder Anthony Volpe, outfielder Jasson Domínguez and pitcher Drew Thorpe.
It is doubtful if the Yankees would give up three great prospects for one slugger, but the names are out there, as are others.
According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, “one rival exec, not with the Yankees, told me they thought the Padres should get two top-100 prospects back for Soto.”
Soto, a four-time Silver Slugger has led the league in walks in the past three seasons and last out hit a .275 with 35 home runs and 109 RBI’s.
Soto goes into free agency after a year and according to an insider, We know that it’s very unlikely, almost zero chance that Soto signs a long-term extension with the team that acquires him. It’s gonna be a rental. A one-year rental, which is what limits the value of him.”
Teammate Tatis Jr is a two-time Silver Slugger and has a career .280 batting average at short stop.
