“Covering officials were in good position and ruled that there was no material restriction” Packers’ Valentine Escapes Penalty Despite Leap on Chiefs’ Valdes-Scantling

The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs and the concluding score after the fourth quarter was 27-19. The Packers stand in the season with a 6-6 score, whereas the Chiefs are at 8-4.

During the game, Packers cornerback Carrington Valentine leapt on the back of Marquez Valdes-Scantling, the Chiefs wide receiver. According to Pro Football Talk, the wide receiver was inside the 10-yard line.

The jump by Valentine on Valdes-Scantling was to be considered a pivotal pass-interference penalty.

However, no penalty was given to the Packers.

After the game, referee Brad Allen stated that the referees had not observed any movement that limited Valdes-Scantling’s play. Hence, that movement did not require them to raise a flag.

Allen shared via reporter Calvin Watkins, “As you may know, on ever play where there may or may not be pass interference, either offensive or defensive, the covering official has to rule whether contact materially restricts the receiver and in this case, the covering officials were in good position and ruled that there was no material restriction that rose to the level of defensive pass interference.”

As per Pro Football Talk, there was contact between Valentine and Valdes-Scantling and the wide receiver’s play was hindered; however, the officials did not see his movement hindered. A call on the play would have given the Chiefs a strong chance for more minutes in the game.
