The Padres are trying to maximize the interest in star batter Juan Soto, asking the Yankees for seven players in return.
Seven Yankees players for one Padre is almost bizarre but the fact that San Diego has the gall to ask for the moon shows just how much they value Soto.
The Yankees have reached a stalemate in their negotiations with the Padres wanting Michael King, Clark Schmidt, Drew Thorpe, Randy Vazquez, Jhonny Brito, two prospects and CF Trent Grisham.
A significant hurdle is that Soto will only be available for one year.
Fans of the New York team have suggested that Soto is the second most wanted player after free agent Shohei Ohtani and are keen for the deal.
The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty acknowledged the stalemate but also does not believe the game is over.
“Stalemate,” Kuty said. “Impasse. Standstill. Whatever you want to call the awkward space occupied by the trade talks between the New York Yankees and the San Diego Padres for superstar left fielder Juan Soto, just don’t call them finished.”
The Yankees do need Soto, a left hander and an outfielder, so perhaps giving up five players could be more reasonable.
