A well-known and respected Philadelphia columnist made the oddest claim ahead of the Eagles vs 49ers blockbuster week 13 clash, claiming Brock Purdy is better than Jalen Hurts.
Mike Sielski of the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote, “Jalen Hurts is admired and beloved here, but Brock Purdy would be a god in Philadelphia. A god.”
Whether he was prescient or delusional or somewhere in between is up for debate as QB Purdy led San Francisco to a memorable 42-19 win over Philadelphia.
The Eagles came up short against a rapidly improving 49ers team and the franchise could clash again soon in the playoffs.
Purdy outperformed Hurts on Sunday throwing 19-27, 314 yards and for four touchdowns.
Hurts struggled and 26-45, landing more passes than Purdy but only gaining 298 yards and one TD.
The column had plenty of stick with Dallas Cowboys beat writer Clarence Hill JR saying, “This is so unfair to Jalen Hurts, who does everything right on and off the field.
“He has his own underdog story. He wasn’t given anything and wasn’t drafted to be a starter. A hard worker. Blue collar guy. But Purdy is a better representative of Philly. A potential God. Why?”
“What does this even mean?” tweeted ESPN’s Stan Verrett.
While USA Today Sports writer Nike Freeman commented, “This is a staggering column and not staggering in a good way.”
Making waves, and stirring the pot, a good columnist always has plenty of people talking.
