Heading into Week 13, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was the consensus favorite to win the 2023 NFL MVP Award according to sportsbooks. After Hurts and the Eagles were dismantled on their home field against the San Francisco 49ers yesterday, a new favorite to win the award has emerged: 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.

Purdy carved up the Eagles defense en route to leading the 49ers to a 42-19 road victory against the reigning NFC Champions, completing 19 of his 27 pass attempts against the Eagles for 314 yards and four touchdowns. The win brought the 49ers to within one game of the Eagles for the No. 1 seed in the NFC, bolstering Purdy’s case for MVP in the process.

This season, Purdy ranks first among quarterbacks in passer rating, completion percentage, touchdowns per pass attempt, yards per pass attempt, and yards per completion. Additionally, Purdy is third in the NFL in passing touchdowns (23).

Purdy’s elite efficiency metrics paired with the 49ers gaining ground on the Eagles and potentially leapfrogging them in the standings have vaulted him up the MVP rankings as a favorite to win the award.

Through 12 games, Purdy has thrown for 3,185 yards, 23 touchdowns, and six interceptions, adding 35 carries for 131 yards and two touchdowns through the ground.

Sportsbooks such as DraftKings and PointsBet have Purdy listed as the odds-on favorite to win the award (+300). However, BetRivers Sportsbook has Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott as the favorite to win the award while Bet365 Sportsbook still has Hurts as a slight favorite over both players.

With the MVP race beginning to tighten up, Purdy is doing his best to separate himself from the rest of the pack and has a legitimate chance to win the award if he and the 49ers continue at this pace.
