NBC to squirrel away from broadcasting USFL and XFL merged games as Golf commitments takes precedence

The United States Football League was broadcast for the past two years by both networks, NBC and Fox. According to Awful Announcing, the USFL has now merged with XFL. The merger was concluded last week by federal anti-trust regulators. They have also announced that their 2024 season will commence on March 30th.

As per John Ourand, the NBA network has informed the combined leagues that the network would not be able to participate in broadcasting the upcoming games as they have already committed to covering the golf events during the initial few weeks of the season. The 2023 season of the USFL commenced on April 15th.

NBC Sports EVP/Communications Greg Hughes shared, “We enjoyed our relationship with the USFL and Fox, but the new earlier schedule made it impossible for us to continue. We wish them success with the new league and their new partners.”

USFL’s ratings last year were not encouraging enough for the NBC network to be majorly concerned regarding the development. The novel league’s broadcast will be divided into multiple networks such as ESPN, ABC, Fox, and FS1.

XFL games used to be aired on ESPN and its subsidiary networks. However, further clarity on the games and teams of the joined leagues will be available with time.
