“I think he yelled SHUT UP!?!?” – Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield expected puppy as surprise instead of wife’s pregnancy

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield and his wife Emily announced on Instagram that they’re expecting a baby girl in April 2024!

Emily spilled the beans on Instagram, writing, “We’ve been hiding a little something…….. But we are THRILLED to share that baby girl Mayfield will be joining our crazy crew in early April 2024!”

But here’s the twist!

Baker thought he was getting a puppy, not a baby!

In an interview published by ESPN, he spilled the beans on his unexpected reaction, saying, “I was in shock, to be completely honest.”

Baker explained that he sent Emily a pic of a Goldendoodle puppy sign outside their hotel, and he expected a furry addition to the family.

So, when he found a “big brother” shirt on their dog at home, Emily’s pregnancy was not in his playbook.

“I started looking around for a puppy, not seeing the ultrasound and the positive pregnancy test right in front of me,” Baker admitted. It was just complete shock, but so blessed. Obviously it’s much more to life than just football. So it’s one of those things that we’re extremely happy about.”

During an Instagram Q&A on December 7, Emily also subtly echoed Mayfield’s confession.

Apparently, when a follower asked what was Baker’s first reaction learning about her pregnancy, she replied saying:

“His jaw hit the floor, I think he yelled ‘SHUT UP!?!? You are?!?’ Then we both cried happy tears.”

Baker is over the moon about becoming a dad.

When asked about being a “girl dad” in the interview published by ESPN, he said with a smile, “I’m going to be wrapped around her finger, just completely screwed.”

Baker Mayfield and Emily Wilkinson exchanged vows on July 6, 2019. They met in 2017, and within six months, the couple decided to take the next step by getting engaged.

Baker Mayfield has completed five seasons, playing for four teams- Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Rams, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Selected as the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Browns, Mayfield’s career stats include 16,288 passing yards, 102 touchdowns, 64 interceptions, a 61.4% completion percentage, and 18,876 yards thrown.

Among his career highlights are leading the Browns to their first winning season in 18 years in 2018, guiding them to their first playoff appearance since 2002, and securing their first playoff victory since 1994 in 2020.
