Patriots assistant coach Jerod Mayo is refusing to be drawn into possibly replacing Bill Belichick as New England’s HC position next season.
Belichick is reportedly leaving the Patriots at the end of an underwhelming season.
“We’re 100 percent focused on the Chiefs. And you know, I only try to control the controllables and that’s out of my control.
“Hopefully as you guys all know, one day I want to be a head coach. Where that is, I don’t know,” he told reporters.
“But at the same time, I would say I have a lot of love for New England. I have a lot of love for the fans, the people around the building. And you know, my family, they love it here as well. So that would be great if I could stay here and continue to progress.”
Mayo signed a long-term extension to his Patriots company contract 11 months ago and turned down head coaching positions elsewhere.
Belichick has been with New England for 23 years and will be remembered for bringing six Superbowl titles to the Patriots.
But as far as long-term planning, if it looks like a duck and walks like a duck then it is a duck.
Belichick could be saved by going 4-0, or even 3-1 in their last four games, but it seems owner Robert Kraft is looking ahead.
