As reported by Le Parisien, Paris Saint-Germain reserve goalkeeper Alexandre Letellier and his family were attacked in their home in Hardricourt, a suburb of Paris. The attackers, armed with knives, entered the house at 2 a.m. on Tuesday.
Letellier called the police, but the robbers threatened the family and demanded money, jewelry, and luxury items.
Alexandre Letellier is married to Chloe. Together, they share two children, Sacha and Jade.
The assailants were arrested by the police, but one suspect remains at large. Two of the three arrested robbers are teenagers and just 16 years old.
Security expert Alex Bomberg emphasizes the need for improved personal security for players and their families. He notes that these crimes are organized and highlights the lack of international arrests concerning such criminal gangs.
“Sadly, these types of incidents will continue to take place until clubs drive change in the area of personal security of players and their families,” he says. “We are not talking about opportune thieves here, we are talking about organised crime – these types of robberies are generally well organised and to date there have been very few arrests made internationally concerning these criminal gangs,” said Alex Bomberg.
Burglars have changed their strategy and are now targeting footballers at home instead of attempting robberies when players are away for matches.
Even though footballers and clubs have spent a lot on personal and home security, burglaries against top-level players have become more common.
As per a February 2022 article, VICE World News analyzed the situation and found that over 80 of Europe’s top football players, including managers, have been victims of home raids since the mid-2000s.
This increase in burglaries seems to be linked to the significant rise in player wages, which have reached unprecedented levels.
Alexandre Letellier began his football career with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), making 14 league appearances for the reserve team during the 2009–10 season. He then joined Angers in the summer of 2010 but struggled to break into the first team for the first two years. Letellier eventually made his professional debut in August 2012 and played his first Ligue 2 match in April 2013.
Over the years, Letellier went on loan to various clubs, including Young Boys, Troyes, and Sarpsborg 08. In January 2020, he signed with Orléans, making six appearances as the club was relegated from Ligue 2. He left Orléans in the summer of 2020.
On September 25, 2020, Letellier returned to Paris Saint-Germain, initially signing a contract expiring on June 30, 2021. However, he later extended his contract for another year. On May 21, 2022, Letellier made his debut for PSG in a 5–0 win over Metz, becoming the 484th player to play for PSG’s first team and receiving a Ligue 1 winner’s medal. On July 6, 2022, he signed a new two-year contract with PSG.
In the last match of the 2022–23 Ligue 1 season on June 3, 2023, Letellier once again came on as a substitute in a 3–2 defeat to Clermont at home, as PSG were crowned Ligue 1 champions.
