In recent seasons, Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler has solidified himself as one of the more versatile and dynamic running backs in the NFL. His ability to take on a bulk of the team’s carries while providing an additional boost as a receiving threat out of the backfield has made him a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. In 2024, he’ll be a free agent.
This offseason, Ekeler and the Chargers were unable to come to terms on a long-term contract extension, putting Ekeler’s future with the franchise in question. The failed contract negotiations led Ekeler to request a trade before seeing a $1.75 million salary increase to his current contract in incentives.
It’s been a disappointing season for Ekeler in 2023. He’s rushed for 506 yards and five touchdowns ( scored at least 12 rushing touchdowns in the previous two seasons) while averaging a career-low 3.6 yards per carry. Additionally, he has hauled in 40 receptions for 373 receiving yards and a touchdown, pacing for his lowest receiving totals since 2020.
However, with three weeks remaining in the season, Ekeler still has a lot to play for despite the Chargers season spiraling to a point of no return in recent weeks: “I’m a free agent after this year, and so I’m still painting my résumé,” said Ekeler, per ESPN’s Kris Rhim.
A strong finish to the season could be enough to secure Ekeler the payday he was looking for during the offseason, whether it be with the Chargers or another franchise.
