This season, the quarterback position has been a popular topic of discussion for the New York Jets. Since four-time NFL MVP Award-winning quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles just four snaps into his Jets debut, the team has been searching for a viable replacement. This week, they may have to do so without Zach Wilson, who suffered a concussion in Week 15.
Wilson and the Jets faced the Miami Dolphins in Week 15, where Wilson took several big hits against a ferocious Dolphins pass-rushing unit. In 22 snaps, Wilson was sacked four times, completing just four of his 11 pass attempts for 26 yards and a lost fumble. As a result, Wilson was forced to come out of the game and enter the NFL’s concussion protocol.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh addressed the media earlier today and discussed Wilson’s potential availability for Week 16: "Zach [Wilson] is still in the concussion protocol," Saleh told reporters.
However, Saleh made it clear that Wilson’s health is improving and that he isn’t "closing the door" on Wilson clearing the concussion protocols in time for Sunday’s meeting against the Washington Commanders. Saleh also mentioned that Wilson will be the starting quarterback when/if he clears the protocol.
NFL veteran backup quarterback Trevor Siemian is expected to be the team’s starting quarterback this week if Wilson is unable to go, per The Athletic’s senior writer, Zack Rosenblatt, who covers the Jets.
Siemian struggled mightily in relief of Wilson last week, completing 14 of his 26 pass attempts for 110 scoreless yards and two interceptions.
