It has been 30 years since the Detroit Lions last won an NFC North divisional title. Sitting at 10-4 with a three-game lead over the second-place Minnesota Vikings, the Lions can end the three-decade-long drought with a road victory over the Vikings in Week 16. Lions quarterback Jared Goff is aware of the magnitude of the moment but knows the job is far from over.
When addressing the media on Wednesday, Goff made it clear that the 2023 Lions can make franchise history with a win but are trying to achieve something bigger. “… a win gets us the division and we understand, we understand, we get it,” Goff said. “I think I’ve said this before, but we don’t carry the weight of the last 30 years…” Goff added.
However, Goff also made it clear that he knew what it would mean for the city of Detroit. “I understand how special it’ll be for the city,” he stated. It’s been an incredible season for the Lions, who have a chance to reach their highest win total since 2014 (11) with a victory over the Vikings in Week 16.
While Goff and the Lions have a chance to clinch their division with a win this Sunday, they could already have clinched a playoff spot by then if the New Orleans Saints defeat the Los Angeles Rams tonight on Amazon Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football.
