This decision by the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority (MSFA) aims to drastically minimize the number of injuries incurred by athletes, reflecting a greater global trend prioritizing player safety.
Kevin Seifert recently reported for ESPN.com that the MSFA had approved a $1.3 million bid to supplant the existing silt-film turf.
This turf, used in three stadiums including Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati, has come under scrutiny following an association with a higher incidence of injuries.
In its place, the Vikings will install a top-tier artificial turf called Act Global Xtreme Turf DX. This transition is part of an ongoing effort to create a safer playing field for athletes.
Unlike the silt-film turf, the new monofilament turf, Act Global Xtreme Turf DX, is known for its technological superiority in providing a safer and more exact replica of natural grass.
Its innovative construction provides remarkable slide friendliness, cushioning ability, and foot stability – features that significantly lower the risk of injuries.
The Vikings did not make the decision to revamp their home turf unilaterally. They collaborated closely with the MSFA, which owns and operates the stadium, to select the winning bid.
The new turf will not only be installed in the U.S. Bank Stadium but also in the Vikings’ practice facility. This move ensures the consistency of the playing surface between the practice and actual game conditions, enabling the Vikings to train effectively, giving them an edge over their competitors.
