Shane Lowry recently shared his thoughts on Jon Rahm’s comments following Rahm’s decision to join LIV Golf. Lowry, in an interview with Brian Keogh of the Irish Independent, didn’t question Rahm’s choice but rather took issue with the arguments Rahm used to justify his move to the breakaway golf series.
According to Lowry, Rahm’s statements about growing the game with LIV Golf were likely scripted, with players being told by communication teams what to say since they’re essentially under the ownership of the new circuit. Lowry remarked, “They’ve signed on the dotted line. They’ve been told by the communications team that this is what you say when you’re asked this and you have no other choice really because they own you now.”
🚨🇮🇪🗣️ #LOWRY SOUNDS OFF — Shane Lowry says he isn’t buying Jon Rahm’s comments about growing the game with LIV GOLF: “I think what Jon said about growing the game and stuff that’s obviously what they have to say. Lowry also offered a perspective from the fans’ point of view, expressing skepticism about Rahm’s comments regarding financial considerations in his decision. He acknowledged the difficulty for fans who have invested their money in golf clubs and memberships to believe a wealthy player claiming the move is necessary to provide for his family. Lowry stated, “People who have spent their hard-earned money going out to join a golf club and buy golf clubs and play golf for the weekend, it’s tough for them to listen to the guy who’s already worth whatever say he has to do this to put food on the table for his wife and kids.”
Jon Rahm’s high-profile move to LIV Golf was officially confirmed on December 7, with the agreement reportedly valued at around $500 million. Additionally, Rahm is expected to assume the role of owner and captain of a new team in the LIV Golf circuit.
