“I hope he leans on me as one of those good people,” – Commanders back-up QB Jacoby Brissett after replacing misfiring Sam Howell in loss to the Jets

Veteran Commanders back-up quarterback Jacoby Brissett said starting line caller Sam Howell can lean on him anytime.

Brissett came on for Howell in a second successive game, nearly leading the team to a stunning comeback win over the Jets.

The New York team led 27-7 when the seasoned Brissett entered the fray, and he led three straight touchdowns and took Washington to a lead before a late Jets drive led to a game winning field goal. The Jets won 30-28.

“I told him ‘This is going to be the hardest part of your career right now. It’s going to feel like you’re in this by yourself. It’s snowballing. It’s one thing after another, it’s one thing after another,’” Brissett said after the game.

“But I know from being in this league, man, the good ones find a way to get to the other side. No matter how long it takes, how hard it is. You surround yourself with good people. I hope he leans on me as one of those good people that will help him get through this because I know I will.”

The Commanders drop to 4-11 while the Jets pick up their sixth win of the season.

With head coach Ron Rivera not naming a starting QB for week 17, Brissett could start.

But Rivera may not be at the franchise next season so all bets are off the table as to whether Howell can keep his regular season starting slot.
