The Patriots ended a poor campaign with a miserable 17-3 defeat to the Jets, dropping them to a 4-13 season.
Legendary coach Bill Belichick has won six Superbowl titles with New England in his 22 years, but history and legacy may not be enough to save the head coach from an exit.
“I’m under contract. I’m going to do what I always do,” Belichick said.
“As far as any decisions or direction for next year, way too early for that.”
Belichick did admit there was a meeting scheduled with team owner Robert Kraft but not give an exact timeline.
“It might be a series of meetings. I don’t know. We’ll handle that internally,” Belichick said.
When asked if he would consider staying on as head coach but taking a back step in personnel decisions, he was open to the suggestion.
I’m for whatever we collectively decide as an organization is the best thing to help our football team,” Belichick said. “I’m here to work to help our team every day. That’s what I’m going to do.”
The Patriots tied with the Panthers for the lowest points scored across both conferences with a lowly 236 each.
Whether Kraft would want an obligatory leader remains to be seen.
