According to the latest updates by The Athletic, the Los Angeles Dodgers and outfielder Hernandez have drawn a one-year, $23.5 million deal.
A league source also revealed the agreement comes with $8.5 million in deferred money set to be paid out from 2030 to 2039.
Hernandez, 31, has played for eight years in the big leagues including the Astros, Blue Jays, and Mariners, and also an All-Star in 2021 with Toronto.
The free agent is yet to complete his physical deal, but the reports of his one-year deal worth $23.5 million are confirmed. The two-time Silver Slugger Award winner will be receiving only $15 million next year, with the rest deferred until 2030-39.
As sources revealed, Hernandez is suspected to have opted for the one-year deal with the Dodgers even after receiving multi-year offers from other teams.
After his deal, the Dodgers are expected to bring a more balanced lineup which will be to the left Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Muncy, Gavin Lux, James Outman, and Heyward all hitting from that side.
Hernandez is another prospectus addition to the Dodgers, already signed AL MVP Shohei Ohtani, pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and former Tampa Bay Rays ace Tyler Glasnow.
Before 2023, he was traded and was with the Seattle Mariners and his average dropped to .258 but still managed to hit 26 home runs and drove in 93 runs.
In his career, he averaged .275 with an OPS of .887 against lefties (.256 and .772 against right-handers), and possibly why the Dodgers have sealed the deal.
